Hurricane Helene: An Overview

As of October 19, 2023, Hurricane Helene is a Category 4 hurricane located in the central Atlantic Ocean, approximately 800 miles east of Bermuda. The storm is moving west-northwest at 16 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. Hurricane Helene is expected to weaken to a Category 3 hurricane by tomorrow and continue on a west-northwest track. The storm is not expected to make landfall in the United States.

Hurricane Helene is the eighth named storm and fourth hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm developed from a tropical wave that emerged off the coast of Africa on October 11th. The wave gradually organized and strengthened, becoming Tropical Storm Helene on October 13th. Helene quickly intensified into a hurricane on October 15th and has continued to strengthen since then.

Impacts of Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene is expected to produce large swells that will affect the east coast of the United States and Bermuda. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents. Residents in these areas should be aware of the hazards and take necessary precautions.

The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane watch for Bermuda and a tropical storm watch for the Azores. Residents in these areas should monitor the storm's progress and be prepared to take action if necessary.
