Mpox Vaccination Recommended for Recent Exposures
Understanding Mpox and Vaccination Guidelines
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccination against mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) for individuals who meet specific criteria.
Eligibility Criteria
- Known or suspected exposure to someone with mpox
- Sex partner within the past 2 weeks who was diagnosed with mpox
- Travel to an area with ongoing mpox transmission
Vaccine Benefits
Getting vaccinated against mpox can help prevent infection or reduce its severity.
Vaccine Timeline
The vaccine should be given within 4 days of contact with someone who has mpox, or within 14 days if the exposure was prolonged or intimate.
Vaccine Options
Two vaccines are available to prevent mpox:
- JYNNEOS vaccine: Licensed specifically for smallpox and mpox prevention
- ACAM2000 vaccine: Initially developed for smallpox prevention, but can also protect against mpox
Importance of Vaccination
Vaccination is essential in preventing the spread of mpox and reducing the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death.
