Cowboys Draft: Jerry Jones May Consider Ezekiel Elliott Return

Cowboys Owner Discusses Running Back Options

Elliott Among Potential Draft Picks

The Dallas Cowboys may be considering a reunion with former running back Ezekiel Elliott, according to owner Jerry Jones. On the opening night of the NFL Draft, the Cowboys acknowledged that they had met with Elliott, who played for the team from 2016 to 2022.

Jones has previously stated that the team is in "drafting mode" at the running back position. However, the Cowboys did not select a running back on Day 1 of the draft. With three picks remaining on Day 2, the team could potentially target a running back with one of those selections.

Elliott, a two-time rushing champion, had a successful tenure with the Cowboys. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first six seasons and was named to three Pro Bowls. However, he struggled with injuries and off-field issues in recent years.

The Cowboys have not had a 1,000-yard rusher since Elliott in 2018. Head coach Mike McCarthy has emphasized the importance of a strong running game in his offense, but the team has yet to find a consistent performer at the position.

The return of Elliott would provide the Cowboys with a proven playmaker in the backfield. However, the team would need to be comfortable with his injury history and off-field issues. The Cowboys also have other options at the position, including Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to draft Elliott will depend on the Cowboys' evaluation of his talent and overall fit with the team. The Cowboys have until the end of Day 2 of the draft to make a decision.
