Arsenal's calamitous first-leg defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League has left them with a mountain to climb in the return leg. The Gunners were comprehensively outplayed in London and will need to produce a performance of immense quality and mental fortitude if they are to overturn the 3-1 deficit.
Arsène Wenger knows that his team will need to be at their very best to beat Bayern. The Frenchman has called on his players to show mental strength and determination in the face of adversity.
"We need to believe that we can do it," said Wenger. "We need to have the mental strength to overcome this challenge. We know it will be difficult, but we are capable of winning this game."
Arsenal will need to be wary of Bayern's attacking threat. The German champions have scored 15 goals in their last five Champions League matches and will be confident of adding to that tally at the Emirates Stadium.
However, Arsenal have a good record at home in the Champions League and will be hoping to use the crowd's support to their advantage. The Gunners have won their last four home games in the competition and will be confident of making it five against Bayern.
The match is sure to be a fascinating tactical battle between two of Europe's top teams. Wenger will need to find a way to nullify Bayern's attacking threat while also creating chances for his own team.
If Arsenal can produce a performance of the highest quality, they have a chance of beating Bayern and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League. However, it will be a difficult task and Wenger knows that his team will need to be at their very best.
